Paul Graham who is both an anti-spam and lisp guru, comments in his FAQ:

Any book on book design will tell you (if your own experience doesn't) that text is most legible with at most 60-70 characters per line.

I have neither experience nor familiarity with book design, but i agree by observation. Thus, the change.
