Health Care
So, prompted by the public policy debate on health care, i made an appointment for a physical with the doctor. Health maintenance, blah blah blah.
Besides the usual poking and prodding, i discovered a few things. When i'm wearing socks, they credit me at 5'4". I'm solidly above 100 pounds at 103.8, but well shy of the 110 needed to give blood. Which is a good thing. They took four vials for bloodwork, and i was lightheaded and seeing stars and all that madness. Well of course i have low blood sugar, you butchers! You told me i couldn't get the lab stuff done unless i fasted and skipped breakfast. I didn't say that. But i thought it.
So they gave me a sucker, and a glass of water, and let me sit in a chair for five minutes while the world stopped spinning. I went and ate a bacon cheeseburger afterwards, but i've felt like garbage all afternoon.
My buddy Mr. Warlord qualified for the Vs. pro tour last weekend in Sacramento. He's awesome, but i think if Mr. Galtwish doesn't qualify as well, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in LA.
My Sunday School class this year is awesome. They're so willing to get into the Word. Some of them even do homework. God's really speaking to me with the memory verse i'm doing with the guys: "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." - 2 Pet 3:9 (NIV) God's got some big promises wrapped up in these youth.
I didn't really write about Promise Keepers. It certainly isn't as controversial as some have made it out to be (on either end of the spectrum-- it's not radically theistic and touchy-feely, nor is it about oppressing women)... i actually was kind of disappointed. I'm not sure what i was expecting, but i was feeling like it was sort of Level 2.0 Christianity. It's important stuff, challenging stuff, stuff we all need to hear... but it didn't really expand the mission or charge that we have as guys. And it was quite unspecific and mushy in terms of what charging it did. The book was interesting, though... Uprising, by Erwin McManus.
I guess i would have taken it more seriously, if his fundamental quests (Virtue, Nobility, Enlightenment) weren't the same as the three principles of Ultima (Courage, Love, Truth). If he had taken those quests and combined them into eight mini-quests or something, i probably would have keeled over into giggles for the rest of the weekend.
As it was, i was engaged, but not blown away, by the whole experience. I've just been thankful that God's been speaking into other areas of my life. I've grown comfortable with the silences, too.
